
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Wet Spots
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom or under a pergola sounds great until you realize you’re basically inviting moisture to a fight with electricity. When steam or humidity hits a scorching hot lamp, you get condensation. That tiny bit of water creates a path for electricity to wander where it shouldn’t, and that’s how you end up with a short circuit or a nasty ground fault.
How to actually keep the water out
The real danger zone is where the power lead meets the quartz tube. It’s the weakest link in the chain. To stop moisture from sneaking into the guts of the machine, we don’t just hope for the best—we use high-temp silicone potting or heat-shrink seals (look for IP65 or higher). It basically shrink-wraps the connection so water can’t get in. And please, make sure the housing is grounded. We stick with a double-insulated design and a dedicated earth wire. That way, if something does go wrong, the breaker trips instantly instead of the whole metal frame becoming live.
Choosing materials that don’t quit
Here’s the thing about standard quartz tubes: they hate damp air. If they get too cold and then suddenly blast to 500°C, they can just crack. To fix that, we use reinforced quartz or special coatings. It gives the glass a bit of “give” so it can handle that thermal shock without shattering. The wires matter just as much. Standard PVC is a mistake here. It gets brittle and cracks under heat, which opens the door for moisture to soak right into the copper. We swap those out for PTFE or silicone-jacketed cables. They stay flexible and keep the water out.
The trade-offs you need to know
High-wattage lamps are awesome because they dry out a room fast, but they’re thirsty for power. If you try to cram too many units onto one circuit, you’ll see a voltage drop, and your heaters just won’t feel as hot. You’ve got to size your cabling to handle that peak load so your conduits don’t start overheating. And for the love of everything, don’t skip the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). It’s the only thing that truly guarantees you’re safe when you’re mixing water and high-voltage heat.
