
Why we put our bathroom heaters through the “steam torture” test
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, random water splashes, and temperature swings that would make a thermostat dizzy. Now, you’ll see a lot of brands brag about an “IP65 rating.” That basically just means the box keeps out dust and a few squirts of water. But that doesn’t tell you if the seals will actually hold up after two years of daily showers. That’s why we don’t just trust the rating—we put every batch through damp-heat aging tests. The battle against the steam Here is the thing about water vapor: it finds a way. It sneaks into the tiniest gaps you can’t even see. Once it’s inside, it sits on the electrical contacts and starts eating away at them. We simulate this by cranking up the heat and humidity for hundreds of hours. We aren’t looking for a quick pop or a spark. We’re looking for the slow stuff. Does the seal shrink? Does the coating get a tiny crack? If the seal gives up during this test, the whole unit goes in the trash. No exceptions. The “breathing” problem Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. When you trap that heat inside a waterproof shell, you create a pressure cooker effect. As the air inside heats up, it expands and pushes hard against the gaskets. Then, the moment you flip the switch off, the air cools down and literally sucks outside moisture back in. It’s like the heater is breathing. That “breathing” is what kills most bathroom heaters. Our tests make sure the gaskets stay tight and springy, even after thousands of these heat-and-cool cycles. The tricky part It’s a bit of a balancing act, though. If we seal the unit too tightly to pass these tests, the heat has nowhere to go. You can’t just slap on more sealant and call it a day—if you do, the internal wiring will eventually fry itself. We spend a lot of time finding that sweet spot where the unit is waterproof but can still “exhale” enough heat to stay safe. Just a heads-up: if you’re putting a high-wattage lamp in a small housing, make sure you give it some breathing room during installation. It’ll make the heater last a lot longer.
