
Why you actually need explosion-proof quartz tubes in wet areas
If you’re picking out a heater for a bathroom or a patio, you’ll probably see “IP65” on the spec sheet. That sounds great. It means the housing is sealed against water. But here’s the thing: the IP rating only protects the box. It doesn’t do a thing for what’s happening inside the lamp. Think about a shower. You’ve got thick steam and wild temperature swings. If you use a basic quartz tube and a single cold drop of water hits that glass while it’s glowing hot, it can snap. Once it cracks, the halogen gas leaks out, the filament burns up, and your heater is dead. Just like that.
The deal with “Explosion-Proof” glass
We use reinforced, explosion-proof quartz because standard glass is just too brittle for this kind of environment. Imagine a tube sitting at 600°C. A cold droplet hits it. That sudden chill causes the glass to shrink in one tiny spot, and pop—it breaks. Our tubes are built to handle those rapid shifts. And even if the glass does fail, it won’t shatter into a million dangerous shards. It stays contained. It’s about peace of mind.
Heat, power, and a few warnings
These lamps use short-wave infrared, which is fancy talk for “instant heat.” You don’t have to wait for the air to warm up; you feel the heat on your skin the second you flip the switch. It’s powerful stuff in a tiny package. But because they run so hot, you have to get your reflectors lined up just right. If they’re off, the heat builds up inside the housing. Over time, that extra heat can eat away at those IP65 seals we talked about, and then you’ve got a real problem.
The trade-off
We made these as drop-in replacements. You don’t need some complicated control board or a degree in electrical engineering to install them. Just swap them in and you’re good to go. Now, they do cost more. Making explosion-proof quartz is harder and more expensive than making the cheap stuff. But in a bathroom? It’s the only way to make sure a little splash of water doesn’t turn into a safety hazard. It’s basically your last line of defense.
